This particular painting holds a special place in Niel’s heart – it was his first painting in almost 30 years. Why so long since he’d last picked up a brush? “Life took me in other directions,” Niel explains. “I worked in animation, then as a writer, plus I was busy being a dad to my two daughters, and it wasn’t until late 2024 that I suddenly got the urge to paint again.”
Doomscroll was painted in the spring of 2025, over several weekend sessions. “I took my time,” Niel said. “I honestly wasn’t sure if I could still paint, so it was lovely to see this coming together slowly. I really didn’t want to rush it.”
